I was walking on the street today wondering about things that happen that I really wish could be illegal but are not necessarily classified as such. Of course in California and in most places, smoking is illegal in certain areas. However, what if smoking was illegal altogether?
I recently got a “talking to” from someone as I made a comment that I couldn’t understand why people still would smoke. The person I was speaking to happened to be quite fond of smoking cigars and apparently my comment really set him off. He wanted me to explain my “moral compass” and found that because I thought smoking was such an odd habit that I suddenly needed to explain my vices. I quickly explained that I didn’t say I couldn’t understand the addiction issues that come along with smoking and of course, I was not trying to say I didn’t have any vices simply because I couldn’t understand why people still smoked. Rather, I was making a point that with all of the information out there, you would think a few people would make a bigger effort to stop. I mean, is that such a crazy statement to make? A casual observation? He then reminded me that there are people out there that think meat is the worst thing for you to eat and because I mentioned I do eat meat, apparently according to this guy my colon is probably going to explode. Um, thanks?
In any event, I would like to see smoking made illegal. I am not quite sure what anyone can gain from it that helps life in a healthy way. That is not to say that I don’t understand that habits are difficult to break and I’m sure people will read into this the wrong way. But, to be honest, I really wouldn’t mind a law that would help the process a bit. I like the idea of smoking being illegal. After all, this blog is called The Not So Legal Show so I would like to throw “smoking” on my list of things I wish were “not so legal”.
Let's make the law entertaining, shall we?

While I agree that it would be in interest of public health if smoking were made illegal, it seems to me that making things illegal because they aren’t good for you isn’t good policy. Would you make someone an outlaw because they liked to have a cigar every once in a while?
In the same vein of thinking, alcohol and gambling should be made illegal as well. As well as driving a single MPH over the speed limit.
Laws should be made with common sense and not with the intent of removing our rights and freedoms as Americans.
